Backed by Damera Corporation, the Town of Tecumseh is introducing its first fleet of fully electric buses—three Karsan eJEST models replacing the aging gas-powered vehicles—marking a significant step toward sustainability and innovation while maintaining the town’s existing transit routes.

The shift to electric transit was enabled by approximately $1.4 million in federal funding from the Rural Transit Solutions Fund, announced last year. With Tecumseh’s previous fleet nearing the end of its lifespan, this upgrade reflects the town’s ongoing commitment to creating a more sustainable and modern public transportation system.

The new electric buses are set to begin service in July 2025, running on the town’s current routes without any changes to schedules. According to town officials, passengers can look forward to a quieter ride, reduced maintenance expenses, and the environmental advantages of zero-emission transit.

Gary McNamara, Mayor of Tecumseh, called the introduction of the electric bus fleet “a significant step forward for our community,” highlighting that the initiative reduces the town’s environmental footprint while improving local transit service. In comments shared with CBC News, he added that climate change has long been a concern and “every little bit helps.” McNamara also noted that beyond transit, Tecumseh is planning to begin “greening our municipal fleet across the entire corporation.”

Karsan eJEST: Enhancing Ridership Through Comfort, Design, and Public Confidence

On CTV News, host Chris Gableton reported that officials noted ridership still hasn’t fully recovered since the COVID-19 pandemic. One contributing factor, they believe, was that the previous buses didn’t provide a comfortable ride. With the introduction of the new electric fleet, however, there is hope that improved comfort and rider experience will help bring more passengers back on board.

Increasing ridership is a key objective behind bringing the Karsan eJEST to communities such as Tecumseh.

Designed for a superior passenger experience, the eJEST offers a quiet, smooth ride with modern features like full air conditioning, low-floor entry for easy accessibility, and zero tailpipe emissions. By prioritizing comfort and convenience, the eJEST supports transit agencies in delivering a service that attracts riders not just out of need, but because it’s clean, dependable, and enjoyable to use.

Maximizing vehicle use is especially important for smaller municipalities like Tecumseh. That’s why the Karsan eJEST offers a right-sized transit solution — designed to match community demand without running underutilized. These compact electric minibuses help ensure efficient service delivery, reduce operational waste, and support both economic and service sustainability.

With full accessibility built in, the eJEST serves a wide range of passengers, regardless of age or mobility. When transit systems operate closer to full capacity, the benefits ripple outward — from easing traffic congestion and cutting per-passenger emissions to strengthening the case for future investment in public transportation. It’s a smarter, more connected approach to local transit.

How the public perceives transit systems can significantly impact their success. Clean, modern, and visually appealing buses tend to attract more attention and encourage people to consider public transportation as a viable option. First impressions truly count — a point illustrated by Ricardo, co-host of CTV News Windsor.ca, who commented on Tecumseh’s new electric buses:

“Those buses look cool to my eye, at least.”

That kind of reaction is exactly what transit agencies strive for. When residents see quiet, sleek electric buses operating in their neighborhoods, it not only generates curiosity but also builds trust in the system. Creating a strong visual and service impression plays an important role in encouraging ridership and fostering long-term public support for sustainable transit solutions.

Smart Charging Made Simple: ABB Terra Wallbox Supports Tecumseh’s Electric Bus Rollout

Tecumseh’s new electric buses are powered by ABB Terra Wallbox chargers—compact, high-performance units built to efficiently charge electric vehicles such as the Karsan eJEST. With the charging infrastructure already in place, the fleet is fully equipped for daily operations from day one.

For transit agencies, this setup offers streamlined operations and reduced maintenance compared to conventional diesel fleets. The ABB Terra Wallbox delivers dependable, energy-efficient charging that helps lower operational costs and increase vehicle availability. Its compact, wall-mounted form factor is especially beneficial for facilities with limited space, enabling easy integration without the need for major infrastructure changes.

These chargers are ideal for overnight charging, allowing vehicles to fully recharge in a controlled, battery-friendly manner. This not only supports optimal vehicle performance but also helps extend battery life—making it a practical, long-term solution for electric fleet operations.

At a cost of just $3 to $4 per overnight charge, each Karsan eJEST can provide 6 to 8 hours of service—making it an exceptionally cost-effective choice for daily transit operations.

This balance of low energy costs, dependable charging, and extended daily range makes the shift to electric vehicles not only environmentally conscious but also financially sustainable for municipalities like Tecumseh.

As part of the deployment, Damera offers complete support for both charger supply and installation. Having the vehicle provider oversee charging infrastructure ensures compatibility and simplifies setup. Because Damera understands the specific technical needs of the fleet, they can prevent common integration issues and reduce the risk of costly installation mistakes.

With efficient charging solutions, optimized operations, and dedicated technical support, Damera helps communities transition to electric transit in a way that’s both seamless and future-ready.

Gwen Baker, eJEST Driver, Shares Her Experience with Tecumseh’s New Karsan Electric Buses

Drivers like Gwen Baker are getting familiar with the feel and features of Tecumseh’s new battery-electric buses.

Driver Tecumseh About the eJEST Performance

Behind the wheel of the Karsan eJEST, Gwen notes some key differences from traditional vehicles:

“They’re a bit different,” she says. “You’ve got to get used to the electric brake. They have a completely different sound and feel because you don’t get that revving noise like you get on a diesel or even a gas vehicle — where you can tell what the engine’s doing. It’ll take a bit of getting used to.”

One standout feature is regenerative braking, which captures energy during deceleration and feeds it back into the battery. This not only helps extend the range of the bus but also reduces wear on mechanical braking systems. While it delivers a smoother and quieter driving experience, it does require a short adjustment period for operators.

Beyond performance, the eJEST creates a more enjoyable and healthy work environment for drivers. With full air conditioning, whisper-quiet operation, and zero tailpipe emissions, the vehicle brings real benefits for both those behind the wheel and those on board.

Mayor Gary McNamara on Tecumseh’s Electric Bus Launch: A Step Toward Sustainable Transit

At the launch event for Tecumseh’s first fully electric bus fleet, Mayor Gary McNamara outlined the importance of this transition and recognized the partners who helped make it happen.

“Today marks an important milestone as we officially welcome the town’s new fleet of fully electric buses. This project is an investment in reliable, modern, and sustainable public transit for our community,” the mayor stated.

The introduction of Karsan eJEST electric buses, supported by federal funding through the Rural Transit Solutions Fund, comes at a critical moment as the town phases out its aging gas-powered vehicles.

“These new electric buses will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve local air quality by producing zero tailpipe emissions. They will operate more quietly, and deliver a better experience for passengers and our neighbourhoods alike.”

Mayor McNamara also emphasized inclusivity and accessibility as central to Tecumseh’s transit goals:

“Importantly, these vehicles are fully accessible, ensuring that all residents — regardless of age or ability — can travel safely and comfortably.”

The new fleet will operate on the same routes and fare structure already familiar to residents, providing a seamless transition to cleaner transit. The Mayor also highlighted complementary investments in trail networks and active transportation infrastructure, reinforcing the town’s broader vision for connected, sustainable mobility.

“By investing in sustainable infrastructure, we’re meeting the needs of today while planning for our future.”

He closed by thanking key partners including First Transit, Damera, and former MP Irek Kusmierczyk, whose support helped secure the grant for the project. He also recognized Chad Jeffery for leading the project on behalf of the town.
