The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) TRANSform Conference & EXPO is one of the public transportation industry's major international gatherings.

‍

The 2026 event is taking place in Chicago from October 4–7, bringing together transit-agency leaders, operators, planners, policymakers, engineers, manufacturers, technology companies and other mobility professionals. More than 12,000 attendees from 85 countries and 800+ exhibiting companies are expected.

‍

‍

As transit agencies expand sustainable technologies and modernize their networks, APTA 2026 is focused on the innovations shaping the next generation of public transportation. The scale of that transformation is significant: APTA describes public transportation as a $102 billion industry with growing momentum around infrastructure, technology and connectivity.

As APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas said:

“We are not just meeting today’s infrastructure needs, we are re-inventing modern public transit and passenger rail to drive economic growth and create more connected, sustainable communities.”

‍

That idea of a more connected community is particularly relevant to the conversation Damera is bringing to APTA. Building better transit is not only about increasing capacity on major corridors. It is also about closing mobility gaps in suburban and lower-density communities, improving first- and last-mile connections, and giving agencies more flexibility to match the vehicle to the service.

‍

This is where right-sized transit becomes part of the broader transformation taking place across the industry.

‍

One of the key themes emerging at APTA 2026 TRANSform & EXPO is that the conversation around zero-emission transit is expanding beyond the vehicle itself. As agencies scale electrification, attention is increasingly turning to the systems required to support the fleet—from charging and infrastructure to training, maintenance and long-term operational readiness.

‍

This closely reflects Damera’s approach.

‍

Putting an electric bus on the road is only the beginning. A successful deployment requires the people, infrastructure, technical knowledge and after-sales support to keep that vehicle operating throughout its service life.

‍

Damera therefore approaches electrification as a complete transit solution. Alongside purpose-built electric vehicles, we support agencies with charging and infrastructure guidance, driver and technician training, high-voltage technical training, parts availability, maintenance expertise and long-term after-sales support.

‍

The same systems thinking applies to vehicle selection. Charging infrastructure, battery capacity, route requirements and passenger demand are interconnected. Selecting a vehicle with significantly more capacity and energy requirements than a service needs can also affect the infrastructure required to support it.

‍

That is one reason right-sizing matters within the larger electrification strategy.

Making Every Transit Dollar Work Harder

With long-term funding and financial sustainability among the major conversations at APTA 2026, right-sizing also has an economic dimension.

‍

Operating more vehicle than a service requires has a cost. Agencies invest in the vehicle capacity itself, the energy required to move it and the infrastructure required to support it—even when much of that capacity is routinely unused.

‍

For appropriate lower-demand applications, a purpose-built electric minibus can change that equation. Matching vehicle size to actual passenger demand can improve capacity utilization, reduce unnecessary energy consumption and potentially lower vehicle and charging requirements.

‍

The objective isn't simply to operate a smaller bus because it costs less. It is to ask a more valuable question:

What is the most effective use of each transit dollar for the service we need to deliver?

‍

Sometimes the answer is a high-capacity bus. Sometimes it is a smaller vehicle that can help an agency provide more frequent, more flexible or more geographically distributed service.

‍

That is the economic logic behind right-sized transit.
